The exploration of atomic radiation has provided mankind with a very important and sustainable source of energy. The production of radioisotopes has dramatically developed the use of radiation in all modem branches of science and technology. Also the application of radioisotopes has been widely spread in medicine for diagnosis and therapy as well. Many countries are increasingly depending on nuclear energy in electricity industry. The fast spreading out of telecommunication technology especially the mobile phones and their base stations and other electrical and electronic appliances has increased the environmental pollution by electromagnetic radiation. As a result, the public has become concerned from the possible health effects of the non-ionizing radiation. In response to growing public health concerns, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched an international project in 1996 to assess health and environmental effects of exposure to electric and magnetic fields. This project brings together current knowledge and available resources of key international and national agencies and scientific institutions, in order to arrive at scientifically-sound recommendations for health risk assessments of exposure to electromagnetic fields. Palestine was among the first Arab countries that participated in this vital scientific project through CRST at Al-Quds University. It is difficult to imagine modern life without the use of the two types of radiation: Ionizing, and non-ionizing radiations. The use of radiation has enabled us to achieve automatic control of self management in industry and technology . Many chemical problems have also been solved as a result of using radiation. Using radiation in chemical reactions help us in obtaining new types of materials, develop them and precisely examine their structure. The application of radiation technology has already invaded the fields of natural and environmental sciences as well as the humanities. On the other hand, and since nuclear radiations can ionize the atoms of materials which interact with, they could be extremely dangerous and may cause huge damage to living organisms. We are usually exposed to naturally occurring Cosmic radiation, air, rocks and soil also contain naturally occurring radioactive elements. Therefore, the role of radiation protection even in countries that don’t posses nuclear industry or don’t have nuclear technology has become important. Naturally occurring radioactivity have been found to be the main contributor to the radiation dose received by Man; in normal operating conditions of nuclear power plants. Palestine is one of the first countries that participated in establishing the Arab Atomic Energy Agency and it enjoys the status of an observer member in IAEA. Indeed, the real participation in scientific programs is so important in building up the new Palestinian society. This ensures the importance of relying on the peaceful applications of nuclear radiation. This requires establishing national Palestinian organization which will be able to assimilate, apply, and settle-in radiation science and technology in our life. Al-Quds University paid attention to this important scientific and technological issue a long time ago, since it believes in peaceful applications of atomic energy, the importance of adopting radiation protection programs and protection of the environment against the possible harmful effects of radiation energy. We believe, this is vital to improve the quality of human life in Palestine. We in the CRST at Al-Quds University and through this scientific endeavour represented in launching our electronic website, are looking forward to serving our Palestinian population. We hope that we achieve our ultimate goals.
